New Outage Notification System

Staying alert and updated on your services is important, and that’s why we are excited to show you our new Outage Notification System that gives you greater flexibility on how you stay up to date with our scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.

In our old status system, customers could subscribe to notifications. That was it. If we created a new status, and ticked the ‘notify’ box, then we notified EVERYONE. And as a few of you may have noticed, if we didn’t un-tick that box when closing an outage a month or so later….. Yes, we notified everyone AGAIN.

The new Outage system doesn’t have a ‘subscribe’ option. Instead, you can pick the tags you actually want to know about. We have pre-populated those for all customers who were already subscribed to the old system, based on their current purchased products.

How to Subscribe

The Outage Tags form a heirarchy. For example, in Sydney, we have a heirarchy like the following:

Sydney
+--Sydney - Cloud Services
+--Sydney - Colocation
+--Sydney - Dedicated Servers
+--Sydney - Hosted Exchange
+--Sydney - Hosted VOIP
+--Sydney - Network
+--Sydney - Network (SMS)
+--Sydney - Shared Hosting
+--Sydney - Virtual Servers
+--Sydney - Wholesale Services

If you subscribed simply to Sydney, then any Outage we tagged with a Sydney - tag, and selected to notify via email, would end up in your inbox. Similarly, if you subscribed specifically to Sydney - Hosted VOIP, and we posted an outage with email notification inSydney, you would receive an email. However if you were subscribed to Sydney - Hosted VOIP, and we posted an Outage with email notification in Sydney - Shared Hosting, then you would not receive the outage. Make sense?

You’ll notice we have a - Network (SMS) tag in each location. This is a special tag which you can use if you want to receive SMS notifications from us in the case of critical outages. You will ONLY receive a notification if we specifically tag an Outage into the - Network (SMS) tag.

Mobile Phone Number Format

We pull your mobile number for SMS’s, from the ‘Phone Number’ on your account. This needs to be in international format, OR be in an Australian mobile number format.
That is, one of these two formats:

 +61400100200 or 0400100200

Single Sign-on

If you’re currently logged into the portal when you load the Outages page, we’ll make an ajax call to check if you’re logged in, and if so, we’ll pop open any tags you’re subscribed to, to show you current and scheduled outages and alerts.

Social Media

Finally, we have full integration into Twitter and Facebook! When we create an outage, as well as having the option of sending to email, we can choose to also push it to Facebook and/or Twitter. In the case of twitter, the Outage and each update will be pushed as a separate tweet. In the case of Facebook, we push the initial outage as a post on our page, and then each update goes in as a reply.

We’re hoping that this new Outage Notification System helps us keep you in the loop on happenings in our environment which affect you, and don’t bother you with issues that don’t. If you have any ideas on how we could make this system even better.
